Week 15 - Colmena - House Arrest - September 8, 2025

What's up everyone

Looking a little homebound :)
Uhm... so... nothing really happened this week.

If you remember, my comp was in the hospital last week. Well on Tuesday we were freed, but the doctor prescribed Elder Hickey with 10 days of bed rest. Elder Hickey isn't supposed to leave the house at all and on top of that our mission president doesn't really want us doing a ton of work so that Hickey can sleep. Our mission president literally called us up while he, our mission president, was in the hospital to tell us that. (Our mission president was back in the hospital for a few days last week due to having some fluid build up issues from his gun shot wound). So what have we been doing? Playing guitar. We both basically are on this cycle of play guitar, go lay in bed, play guitar, go lay in bed. It actually is so boring here.

On Friday I did have the chance to do exchanges. Another companionship has been having some issues, so I got sent to go work in their area. Super good to be out of the house! Not much happened on the exchange. I ate some bugs, I ate some grass, I used my hand to wipe my tears away. No just kidding we just taught some lessons and had some food.
So yeah, nothing's going on. Just a lot of failed attempts to play, We're Gonna Be Friends, by the White Stripes.

Please pray for my comp and for my area! Pray that when we are released on Friday that we can find people to teach!

I love you all!

From our phone call:

Sam has used his time this week to deep clean their apartment. He said he threw out 6 garbage bags of random stuff. For example, there was an area under their stairs full of an old missionary's things that he left when he went home. Sam said it was the missionary's whole wardrobe. They also found an old planning book that belonged to this missionary and it was from 2022. So it's been sitting there for awhile!

There was a big black stain on their carpet that Sam decided to clean. But when he cleaned it, he realized that their brown carpet is actually a light tan color. He realized that their carpet is overall very dirty! So now instead of a big black spot, there is a big clean spot :)

They have a neighbor who is a member. When she found out Elder Hickey had been in the hospital and that they were stuck at home, she brought over some food. She came a back later to collect the plates and asked if they wanted her to bring over some yard tools so they could clean up their yard, her gentle way of saying they needed to keep up their yard :) . Elder Hickey said yes. So Sam spent part of one day hand trimming their little spot of lawn with garden shears and raking up some areas.

When the zone leaders came to visit them in the hospital last Sunday, Sam showed them how he has been programming some simple games using google sheets. Today, 4 sets of missionaries came over for P-day to play some games with Sam and Elder Hickey since they can't go out. Sam was super grateful that they all decided to spend their p-day at his apartment so they could have some company. The zone leaders were some of those missionaries who came over. One of the zone leaders asked Sam if he thought he could do some programming in google sheets that would help the zone leaders with some spreadsheet tasks they have to do. Sam is excited to spend the next few days of house arrest working on some programming in google sheets!

Sam and Elder Hickey are going to be living with the zone leaders for the rest of this week so Sam can get out easier on some exchanges. He is excited for that. And then they are free to get back to work on Friday in their regular area.

Today they also went back to the hospital so Elder Hickey could have a check up to see how he is doing. He seems to be doing well. They went to the mall next door to grab lunch before they headed home. While they were at the mall, they ran into a group of Elders from the Mexico City North mission. Sam thought that was fun to see missionaries from another mission!
